The Blog: Expedition to Vietnam
I invite you to join me as virtual members of a scientific expedition to Vietnam! I have been awarded a fellowship from the Earthwatch Institute to study butterflies in the tropical forests of Northern Vietnam. Check out the Butterflies of Vietnam Expedition website to find out more!
During the week of May 14-18, I will be in the Tam Dao National Park in Vietnam capturing, documenting, and studying butterflies. I will hold two live classes via a satelite phone. In addition, you will be able to follow my progress and ask me questions on a daily basis using the blog below.
The blog on this website has been created in order to allow Mr. Bucs' students, friends, and community to share in his experience in Vietnam. Please focus your comments and questions on the expedition.

Mr. Bucs,
Why do you get to have all the fun?
How can students post comments to you?
It's easy. Just click on the "comments" button. A small pop-up menu will appear. Type in the box below "Leave your comment," enter your name, and press the "publish" button.
In response to the question "why do you get to have all the fun"...I don't know. Just lucky I guess.
Thanks. That was easy! I'll make sure to send messages/questions that are relevant and appropriate. Talk to you soon!
Jeffrey,
I visited Tam Dao National Park about 5 years ago. Hired a local guide for a private tour and it was an absolutely amazing place. I was not there to see the buterflies, but did get some good pictures of some.
By the way, the socks will not keep the leeches away. I wore long socks and had many leaches on my ankles as well as all over my legs and some even got inside my shoes. Didn't know they were there until we got back to his hut where his wife fixed us a bowl of Ga (chicken)Pho. While eating, I noticed lots of blood in my shoes and then pulled my pants legs up to see my legs covered in blood. His wife went outside to pick some herbs that would stop the bleeding while he picked them off me. Not as big a problem as the squimish would make it, but still a problem you can look forward to.
If you want to hear more of my experiences there and other places in Northern Viet Nam (I have been there 6 times, staying about a month each time), I am Lee Armstrong, LRA@tiac.net.
Dear Mr. Bucs --
I am looking forward to learning more about butterflies through your travels. I wonder how the butterflies of Asia are the same as and different from the butterflies of North America. Will you learn about that?
Regards,
Ms. Dean, your comrade middle school teacher and friend.
I am just beginning to learn about butterflies, their life cycles, and the environmental benefits of studying them. It is not an area of expertise for me. I am looking forward to learning a great deal more about them when I am there. I'm sure that anything I learn about any particular species of butterflies I will learn while I'm there or after I get back. Now that you ask this question I will be sure to pose the question to our scientist, Dr. Vu.
Guess what on 5/11/07 some of our caterpillars hatched! Of course i was to afraid to go see them. :)
